This year’s International Women’s Day has a special meaning not only for the women across Southeast Asia, but most especially for the women of Burma who have long suffered from massive political exclusion and discrimination. They continue to be deprived of their participation in democracy building processes such as in peace and treaty negotiations, constitution building and so-called reform processes, and participation in important international/regional fora such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Filipino solidarity activists call for inclusion of genuine peace and democratization in Burma in PH-MYA bilateral talks
One hundred (100) solidarity activists belonging to the Free Burma Coalition – Philippines (FBCP) today held a symbolic action in front of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to press for Burmese people’s demands in the second day of Burmese President Thein Sein’s visit to the Philippines. An open letter addressed to President Thein Sein and President Benigno Aquino III was handed over to the representatives of the DFA, to urge the two ASEAN leaders to include in their ongoing bilateral agenda the urgent need to uphold and advance Burma’s (Myanmar) transition to real peace and democracy now.

In light of Burmese President Thein Sein’s state visit to Manila, we in the Free Burma Coalition-Philippines (FBC-P), a solidarity and advocacy movement of people’s organizations, NGOs, and individual activists in the Philippines that aims to promote democracy, peace and human rights, call on the leaders of the two ASEAN countries to include in their ongoing bilateral agenda the pressing need to uphold and advance Burma’s transition to real peace and democracy now.
FBC-Philippines holds Solidarity Rally as part of the 25th Commemoration Anniversary of the ‘8-8-88’ Peoples Uprising in Yangon
In observance of the 25th anniversary of Burma/Myanmar’s 8-8-88 reform movement, the Free Burma Coalition – Philippines (FBC-P), together with the Asia Pacific Solidarity Coalition (APSOC), held a symbolic solidarity rally on August 8, starting at 10:00 a.m., in front of the Burmese/Myanmar Embassy in Makati, Metro Manila. The activity also coincides with the commemoration of the 8-8-88 uprising by various activists and groups in Yangon, today.
A total of seventy (70) Filipino solidarity activists from various sectors and networks attended the Manila symbolic solidarity rally. The primary speakers for the event were Jun Santos and Nice Coronacion of the Alliance of Progressive Labor (APL), Rasti Delizo of Sanlakas, and Malou Tabios of APSOC and the FBC-P secretariat.
