Citing China as Burmese junta’s number one supporter, activists around the world today picketed Chinese embassies worldwide and challenged the current Chinese government to reverse its foreign policy on Burma.

Members of Free Burma Coalition and Asia Pacific Solidarity Coalition (APSOC) also commemorated the 19th Anniversary of the SLORC coup d’etat that grabbed power in 1988.

Democracy activists for Burma declared September 18 as “Global Day of Protests for Burma” where 5 major cities in the US and in other countries will launch rallies in front of Chinese embassies and consulates to denounce China’s continuing support to the military regime in Burma.

Gus Miclat, coordinator of APSOC and convenor of FBC-Phils said, “ We challenge China to reconsider its stance on Burma. China has always projected itself as the champion of the Third World, of the oppressed and exploited and this support must be translated in supporting the peoples of Burma and not its elite and brutal rulers. The continuing military adventurism of the junta must be stopped and it is the duty of all civilized and legitimate states to help.”

He added, “China has been a major stumbling block in the international campaign to pressure the Rangoon generals to reform. Now, its time for the Chinese government redeem itself and that it is willing to become part of the solution to the Burma problem. Obviously, if China refuses to become part of the solution, then it is part of the problem.”

FBC-Phils and APSOC also urged China to join or even lead international calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners in Burma. They likewise urged China to insist publicly that Burma’s military regime should participate in tri-partite dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy and Burma’s ethnic groups.

To further redeem itself, it should initiate the security council action. China should stop blocking or vetoing any UN Security Council resolution for Burma, the groups concluded.
