The recently concluded presidential elections in East Timor was remarkably peaceful and free, quite the opposite of what the international community feared arising from the political turmoil and violence that broke out in the country a year ago.
The Asia Pacific Solidarity Coalition (APSOC), the spin-off from the erstwhile Asia Pacific Coalition for East Timor or APCET, is very much pleased of this positive turn of events.

The Asia Pacific Solidarity Coalition (APSOC), the spin-off from the erstwhile Asia Pacific Coalition for East Timor or APCET, is very much pleased of this positive turn of events. It commends the Timorese people on this very significant accomplishment. The Timorese has once again proven to the world that they are indeed a peace-loving people, disciplined and determined even if most of them live in abject poverty and want. Indeed, their vaunted irrepressible spirit can overcome any obstacle including political differences and persuasions. The responsible exercise of their right to vote manifested a burning collective desire to better their nation.
While final election results have yet to be formally announced and amidst protests from some candidates and some isolated and minor hitches, we hope that all stakeholders in Timor Leste will remain vigilant and guard against spoilers or saboteurs of the calm and peace prevailing now in the country.
The challenge remains for this atmosphere and spirit to be sustained beyond the Presidential run-off in May and the parliamentary elections in June. We call upon our colleagues in the solidarity movement around the world, the United Nations and Timor Leste’s neighbour countries to fully support the Timorese people’s journey towards genuine democracy and a meaningful independence.
