Aware and deeply saddened by the violent crackdown of the peaceful and democratic protests in Burma, the Mindanao Peoples Caucus (MPC) calls upon the leaders of the world to embrace the monks and democratic defenders under the mantle of international protection and solidarity. The monks are paying the price of democracy with their own blood and we cannot continue to simply watch them die one by one in the hands of a brutal and ruthless military regime.

We in Mindanao share the grief and suffering that the peoples in Burma are facing right now. Having experienced the dark years of martial law, we resonate with every call for freedom and each cry for help. We condemn the wanton and senseless killings of the monks and democratic defenders in Burma. We share the outrage of the international community even as we realize that despite international appeals for restraint and respect for human rights, the military junta even turned more repressive and violent in desperation for political survival.

Akin to the situation of the Bangsamoro and indigenous peoples in Mindanao, we also extend our solidarity to the ethnic nationalities in Burma who have become refugees in other countries and rendered homeless within their traditional territories because of the continued occupation and aggression of the military junta. We believe that through peaceful and constructive dialogue, a process of regime change must immediately take place under the auspices of the United Nations.

The world cannot simply allow this carnage to continue. We call on the United Nations to immediately deploy its peacekeeping force to be able to abate the mayhem. We also call upon the ASEAN to exhaust all diplomatic courses to pressure the military junta to agree to a constructive and peaceful dialogue with the participation of the ethnic nationalities.

We salute the brave and courageous peoples in Burma and we shall continue to pray for your inevitable victory.
