A student leader-activist from Burma is in Mindanao on a one-month internship program to learn about the peace process in Southern Philippines in anticipation of similar peace initiatives in his own country.
Activists picket Asean Regional Forum
{mosimage}Members of the Free Burma Coalition-Philippines and Asia Pacific Solidarity Coalition (APSOC) today held a rally outside the Shangrila Plaza Hotel in Makati City and urged delegates of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) to include the issue of Burma on ARF’s agenda. The groups are also calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi whose term of house arrest expires on May 27, Sunday.
IID joins the 5th Asia-Europe Roundtable
The Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID) has been invited to join the 5th Asia-Europe Roundtable (AER) on “Sustaining the peace through post-conflict reconstruction” to be held in Singapore on May 23-25.
Southeast Asia GPPAC meets ASEAN Secretary-General
Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) – Southeast Asia led by regional initiator Gus Miclat with RSG representatives Muhadi Sugiono, Indonesia national co-initiator and Chalida Tajaroensuk, Thailand national co-initiator and Carmen Lauzon of the secretariat held an audience with the ASEAN Secretary General Ong Keng Yong on March 27 at the Hyatt Hotel in Manila. The occasion was also the holding of the High Level Task Force (HLTF) on ASEAN Charter dialogue with civil society organizations.
IID anchors panel for peace and human security in SAPA General Forum
ASIA’s democracy is in crisis.
This was noted by Gus Miclat, Executive Director of the Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID), in a plenary and workshop discussions during the recently concluded General Forum of the Solidarity for Asian Peoples Advocacy (SAPA) held in Bangkok, Thailand last 5-6 February 2007.
IID anchored a panel on peace and human security during the said Forum.
Burma activists stage “lovapalooza” for Burma
Chanting “Free Aung San Suu Kyi now! Democracy in Burma now!”, almost 100 Burma activists spearheaded by Free Burma Coalition (FBC) and Asia Pacific Solidarity Coalition (APSOC) held a rally infront of Burmese Embassy in Makati City, February 14.
Staging their own version of “lovapalooza”, the protesters kissed pictures of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on top of the heart-shaped red baloons.
